This wine can stand can stand up to rich and robust fare, but is also perfect to complement simply cooked or grilled red meat, game and chicken. It works well with most cheeses and cold-cuts, including salami. Vegetarians can try it with roast root vegetables or vegetable tarts. Avoid ingredients and preparations that are too subtle, cream sauces and anything that is overly salty or spicy.

Wine tasting notes

A dark and broody wine with aroma of plum, dark chocolate and cassis. The palate is rich and powerful with mouthfilling flavours of dark berries, savoury chocolate and plum. A structured wine with depth, complexity and elegance that will age gracefully and reward careful cellaring.

Winery Information

The Lloyd family have been making wines in McLaren Vale since 1968; Mark Lloyd has now handed over the winemaking reins to his son, Duncan. Though well known for introducing to Australia a range of varietals with an Italian emphasis, Coriole’s bedrock is in the strength of its outstanding Shiraz plantings; indeed the Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is one of McLaren Vale’s greatest. The estate has started the process of organic certification, having farmed organically for many years.

Vinification Notes

We are told that the trick here is the Merlot; often more structural than the Cabernet, its blending has to be precise so as to not overwhelm the Cabernet. Small batch open ferments, 2 years in barrel and then 2 years’ bottle age before release.
