Description

Named after family matriarch, ‘The Merle’ is selected from the best parcels of Riesling from our Polish Hill River Estate. The Merle represents the pinnacle of Riesling at Pikes, showing concentration, sense of place and purity.

Wine tasting notes

Aromas of freshly cut lime, citrus blossom. There are mineral notes that speak to origin of the wine. Complex aromas of carraway seed add to the mix. Mouth watering from the start, a highly concentrated mix of sweet lime, bright acid and talcy texture.

Expert reviews

James Suckling (2020) - 93 pts

A very fine, fresh and focused riesling, as is the style of Merle. The nose has intense lime and flint aromas with attractive wet-stone and spice notes. The palate is cleverly pitched and poised with a long stream of unwavering lime flavor. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

James Halliday (2020) - 98 pts

Named after the family matriarch. Selection of the best parcels of fruit from the Polish Hill River estate. pH 2.93, TA 8.23 g/L, RS 3.1 g/L. Pikes' flagship, but also a Clare Valley flagship. It's not often a 6-month-old riesling can be described as luscious, but that's the impact of this wine. It's citrus focused, of course, and it also has keynote acidity, but it's the honeyed mouthfeel and flavour that hits the jackpot.
