Wine tasting notes

A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over naming Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins' characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin balleys - the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Deep inky purple in colour with crimson hues this wine displays red current and blackberry notes together with complex spicy aromas. On the palate layers of wild berry fruit character with nuances of dried herb contribute to great complexity. Long fine velvety tannuns and a core strength of flavour persists through the length of the palate.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 92+ pts

June 2016 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Shiraz Remus is redolent of cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with hints of lavender, spice box, earth, Provence herbs and peppercorns. The palate delivers way more punch than the nose suggests with mouth-filling red berry and spice flavors supported by rounded tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and peppery.

JancisRobinson.com (2013) - 17 pts

Jan 2016 - Blueberry fruit and a nice eucalypt note. Spicy and picquant despite its fruit-centricity. Fine grain tannin. (RH)

Wine Spectator (2013) - 94 pts

Densely packed, with black pepper-accented black cherry, plum and floral flavors that nestle into a bed of plush tannins, finishing with intensity and depth. The finish just keeps expanding. Drink now through 2025. 500 cases made.

James Halliday (2014) - 97 pts

50+yo vines, mostly destemmed and crushed into small open fermenters, some batches including whole bunches, cold soak, hand-plunged, an extended period on skins, matured in French hogsheads (45% new) for 22 months. The bouquet's harmony of red and black fruits and oak aromas flow into the medium-bodied palate, perfectly ripened shiraz standing proudly centre stage. Secondary, savoury notes to get air time, but the core is this beautifully detailed and supple palate of red and black cherry fruit, elegance the last thought.

Wine Front (2013) - 93 pts

Blackcurrant, mint chocolate, floral notes, creamy vanilla oak, layers of spice. Medium to full bodied, silky and spicy with a distinctly saucy aspect to its flavour profile, supple fine grained tannin, suggestions of truffle and tinned corn lurking at the back of the shelf, and a smooth finish of fair length. I think the Romulus will take on a better flavour profile as it ages, though this is very seductive and fine to drink now.

Miscellaneous (2014) - 5 stars

Nicks.com.au, 98pts - "Sourced from 50 plus year old vines the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads, 45% new, for a period of 22 months. Outstanding colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with a very deep dark purple black hue. Exotic aromatics of liquorice and dark plum infused with subtle clove leap out of the glass overlaid by smoky cedar and dried meats followed by spicy pepper and dried herb end notes. Possessing magnificent concentration and richness along with a supple textural feel the palate also displays great finesse and class. Layer upon layer of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruit soak the palate followed by spicy clove infusions, some smokiness, dried meats and pepper. The beautifully managed tannins have a satin like feel. Superb power and depth with an exceptionally long finish of spicy dark plums, liquorice, clove infusions, smoked dried meats and pepper."
