Wine tasting notes

Deep red/purple with crimson hues. Dark red berries, nutmeg, black pepper, subtle oak and complex barrel ferment characters showing through. Mouth-filling, elegant, flavoursome, red berries, integrated oak, but above all; soft and velvety. Palate lingers well after the wine has been swallowed. The kind of flavour that true Shiraz lovers lust after.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 90 pts

Aug 2015 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Deep garnet/purple, the 2013 Shiraz offers pure and intense blackberry and black plum aromas with dark chocolate, licorice and clove hints. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is rich, has good concentration and rounded tannins and finishes long. This is textbook stuff!

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2013) - 87 pts

Deep violet color. Musky, smoke-accented dark berry and cherry pit scents are lifted by a peppery nuance. Broad and fleshy but a bit blocky on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that open up slowly with aeration. Fleshy but on the simple side, finishing with good punch and chewy tannins. I wonder if a little bottle age would help this primary wine unfold. -- Josh Raynolds

JancisRobinson.com (2011) - 16 pts

Dark crimson. Salty. Dense with some freshness. Tannin and acidity relatively mellow. QGV

James Suckling (2014) - 92 pts

A straight-shooting style that has plenty of darker berry and plum fruit aromas and flavors. The tannins are a real feature, they run even and fluid, holding flavors in deep and fresh. Crunchy finish. Good balance. Drink from 2017.

James Halliday (2015) - 91 pts

From the estate bio-certified vineyard at Willunga, picked over 3 weeks commencing 19 Feb, open-fermented, thence to 20% new French and used French and American hogsheads for 12 months. Rich, full-bodied and full-flavoured, oak much more evident here than in the Down the Rabbit Hole Shiraz. Needs a few years, but has potential.

Wine Front (2013) - 93 pts

Made by Walter Clappis but it seems to be a brand unto itself. Grown biodynamically, matured in both French and American oak, and bottled unfiltered. Weight, flavour, freshness, length. It’s McLaren Vale to a tee, almost old school, but it’s so well done. Blackberry, chocolate, red cherry and coffee. Balanced and smooth. For many red drinkers this will be just what the doctor ordered.

Miscellaneous (2015) - 4 stars

Fiona Beckett, The Guardian Oct 2016 - "Hooray for The Hedonist 2015 (14% abv), ...which reminds me of the gloriously lush McLaren Vale shiraz I fell in love with back in the 1990s, only today it’s produced in biodynamically cultivated vineyards – well, of course it is. (I was going to add almost certainly by a bearded winemaker, but it turns out he isn’t. A rare exception, these days.)

Miscellaneous (2015) - 4 stars

Nicks.com.au - "Certified bio-dynamic. Presents a youthful inky black red colour with a bright dark purple hue. Ripe plummy liquorice and blueberry scents rise from the glass followed by some vanillin oak and spice. Rich, voluptuous fruit flavours of dark plum, liquorice and ripe blackberry dominate with a hefty dose of sweet vanillin oak on the back palate. Velvety like mouthfeel and tannins. Aftertaste of plummy liquorice and spicy sweet vanillin oak."
