Wine tasting notes

Ripe cherry, blueberry, plum, hints of fruit cake and chocolate.

Food matching

Gamey dishes would be suitably paired with this Merlot. Roast turkey or<br /> roast pork with all the trimmings would be delicious accompaniments.

May 2014 - Reviewer : Lisa Perrotti-Brown. Pale to medium ruby in color the 2012 Merlot is scented of warm plums and spice box. It gives a good amount of plummy flavor in the mouth with a soft texture and short to medium finish. This is a very good value wine for everyday drinking. Drink it now.

James Halliday (2015) - 85 pts

Machine-picked, crushed and destemmed, 3 months in tank with French oak chips, pressed. Once again, Deakin has done well with this dishy, red bowl of fruits.

Jeremy Oliver (2012) - 88 pts

Wonderful for its price, this finely balanced and focused merlot is genuinely varietal and even brings some cellaring potential. Its juicy aromas of dark cherries, plums and cedar/vanilla oak deliver volume and perfume, while its smooth, evenly balanced and elegant palate is knit with sweet, dusty vanilla oak, underpinned by fine tannins and finished with a lively acidity.

Huon Hooke (2012) - 87 pts

In outstanding years, such as 2012, you can find some surprising value-for-money wines, such as this. It's a bright, simple fruit wine, medium-bodied and smoothly textured, with some fleshiness and palate length. Dark-fruit aromas and flavours; soft tannins. A head-turning wine that really over-delivers for $10. Best now to 2017.

Ray Jordan (2012) - 87 pts

Merlot from the Murray Darling region, and very good. This is soft and plush with a medium-weight palate that delivers your typical cherry and light redcurrant characters with some nice plum and spicy characters. Fine supple tannins and understated oak. It's a nice drink now wine at a great price.

Miscellaneous (2012) - 4 stars

Ben Thomas. The Weekly Review - "Deakin Estate is owned by the Ferrer family, who are behind Freixenet - one of the world's great sparkling bargains. Simply, this is a good, varietal drink that's far more enjoyable than most merlots that cost twice the price. It smells of rose petals, dark berries, redcurrants, mocha and a little spice. It's not overly complex, but pure redcurrant, raspberry, cherry and pepper flavours are pretty tasty. Bright acid and grippy tannins sit nicely within the wine and it's this seamlessstructure that lifts it above the average $10 wine. "
