Wine tasting notes

The wine leaps out of the glass with perfumed white citrus florals, spice and grapefruit. A real generosity and poise on the palate. Ripe juicy limes upfront, with a crisp acidity that carries the fruit all the way into a long saline, mineral finish. Elegant yet powerful, it builds layers in the mouth as the wine opens up. Consistent with the now well-established Isolation Ridge style this wine reflects both the low-yielding, dry growing conditions of this site. The balance of pristine fruit flavours and defining acidity result in an exceptional wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared with the confidence as it will continue to develop further complexity for many years to come. A wet spring provided good early vine growth, a dry summer with some minor rain events in January and early February kept the dry grown vines in optimal health.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2016) - 90 pts

Picked slightly riper than the other two Rieslings reviewed here, the medium-bodied (12.5% alcohol) 2016 Riesling Isolation Ridge offers peach-like aromas alongside hints of lime. It's not as austere as the Poison Hill, and somehow less interesting because of that, being a bit broader and less filigreed on the palate. It should drink well for up to a decade.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014) - 93 pts

Pale straw. Vibrant, mineral-laced lime and quince aromas, along with suggestions of jasmine, green tea and ginger. Lithe, wiry and precise on the palate, conveying a suave, delicate touch to its nervy citrus fruit and lemongrass flavors. Pure, weightless Riesling with superb finishing clarity and mineral-driven persistence.

JancisRobinson.com (2017) - 16+ pts

Pure, crystalline nose and sharp floral acidity on the edge of the palate. Finely etched and very clean. I should imagine this would age well but at the moment it's a tad young and simple.

James Suckling (2014) - 97 pts

A wine that has now become so consistently great, it is a liquid tribute to the dedication of the Cullam family, to their vineyard and winemaking; this 2014 is no exception. The nose is reminiscent of lime juice on crushed rocks and for a riesling lover that is basically aromatic nirvana - there are some gentle florals and a spicy edge too. The palate has deep-set power and striking purity; it draws deep and then fires like an arrow in a straight lime-drenched line of tangy citrus flavor, holding long, nailing the target. Exhilarating now, this will age for more than a decade without raising a sweat.

Decanter (2017) - 91 pts

Fragrant citrus bouquet, floral ginger spice hints. Concentrated citrus palate, crunchy acidity, nice spice edges through the long fresh finish

James Halliday (2017) - 95 pts

Some colour development, but not alarming. A wine of impeccable bloodlines and breeding, not a hair out of place, nor a crease in its clothing. The young rieslings from all parts of Great Southern are a pleasure to do business with. Citrus, apple and silvery acidity are as refreshing as they are cleansing.

Jamie Goode (2016) - 93 pts

Beautifully aromatic, floral nose with delicate citrus fruits. The palate is light, balanced and deliciously fruity with a juicy, mineral character. Lovely purity and elegance to this wine.

Wine Front (2017) - 94 pts

Essence of riesling. Floral and generally pretty but brilliant with fruit intensity. Lime blossom, honeysuckle, slate and then a gorgeous burst of gunsmoke-infused citrus. Ultra dry. Top class

Huon Hooke (2017) - 96 pts

Bright, light yellow colour, with a wonderfully refined, subtly fragrant bouquet, youthful and bright, fresh as a daisy and nascent, the palate just off-dry and endowed with delicious fruit flavours in the lemon, lime and even grapefruit spectrum. Outstanding, and should be long lived

Ray Jordan (2017) - 93 pts

This excellent expression of riesling used a small amount of barrel fermentation to bring texture into the wine. Has a spicy floral aroma, with hints of minerals and light kaffir lime. The palate is very long, with a precise focus to the finish. This was an excellent year for riesling and it will happily cellar for another 15 years
