Wine tasting notes

A skin contact Semilon that centres on texture and spicy flavours rather than fruit. Savoury and saline with a bright gold colour and notes of salted nuts, white pepper and green apples

Expert reviews

Decanter (2018) - 93 to 100 pts

From two vineyards, planted in 1960 and 1972, on the hills of the Siebritskloof. This variety used to account for around 90% of plantings in South Africa according to David, but nowadays it's more like 1%, which is a shame as this is a delicious example. It initially has a creamy, custard-like note which yields to the lemon-driven aromas, joined by a touch of honey and a hint of lime leaf. The fruit underwent skin contact for one week, giving it a textured, pithy palate which displays some creamy apricot and pure lemon flavours. Matured in foudre for 12 months - James Button

Tim Atkin (2018) - 92 to 100 pts

To make up for the variety's comparatively low acidity in the Swartland, David and Nadia Sadie used seven days of skin contact on this old-vine Semillon, produced for the first time in 2018. Elegant, bready and showing some tannic structure, it's a promising début from this brilliant couple - Tim Atkin MW
