Wine tasting notes

With just 4 barrels produced. Donovan Rall's red blend is equal in quality to his 5 star white blend and every bit as complex. Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache and Carignan fruit was meticulously sourced from specific vineyards selected for their unique soil, aspect, slope and micro-climate. After natural fermentation, each component was transferred to small French oak barrels for maturation before blending. It’s a dark, sleek, broody black fruited Rhone blend with textural layers of black cherry and savoury plum and subtle hints of coffee bean and dry earth. Fine mineral tannins balance clean fresh acids.

Expert reviews

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2019) - 93 pts

The 2019 Ava Syrah comes from schist soils and is whole bunch fermented before aging in used oak. It has a gorgeous, seductive nose of pure blackberry, mulberry and light pine needle and garrigue scents, a bit of fennel emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins on the entry, and plenty of graphite-tinged black fruit merging with savory dried blood notes toward the beautifully balanced finish. You could broach this now, but personally I would tuck away a few bottles - Neal Martin

JancisRobinson.com (2019) - 17.5 pts

Deep crimson. Pure, luscious, sweet-yet-salty Syrah on the nose with real polish. You could really lap this up straight away, while being tempted to open a bottle of Côte Rôtie for comparison. Bravo! Really lifted and eloquent. Who would guess this fruit was grown in a hot, dry climate? I wonder who grew this fruit? (Though a day or two after opening the wine seemed to gain flesh.) Platter's Guide tells us he is growing an increasing proportion of his grapes himself; perhaps this is the evidence? - Jancis Robinson

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2019) - 5 stars

Wonderfully refined expression of schist soil on two Swartland sites. 2019 such delicacy in its floral, wild herb & nascent truffly fragrance. The flavours multi-layered, with supportive acid, fine-grained tannins, ending with expansive savoury fantail. 100% wholebunch, older oak 10 months. Wine tasted by Angela Lloyd.
