Wine tasting notes

With just 4 barrels produced. Donovan Rall's red blend is equal in quality to his 5 star white blend and every bit as complex. Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache and Carignan fruit was meticulously sourced from specific vineyards selected for their unique soil, aspect, slope and micro-climate. After natural fermentation, each component was transferred to small French oak barrels for maturation before blending. It’s a dark, sleek, broody black fruited Rhone blend with textural layers of black cherry and savoury plum and subtle hints of coffee bean and dry earth. Fine mineral tannins balance clean fresh acids.

Expert reviews

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2018) - 91 pts

The 2018 Red comprises Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. It has what you might call a “ballsy” nose of black plum, raisin, touches of Christmas cake and menthols that could have been overblown were it not in the hands of a talented winemaker. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tart entry and flavors of tarry black fruit laced with tobacco and dried blood. Not tremendously long in the mouth but it retains fine tension. Very fine - Neal Martin

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2018) - 4.5 stars

Drought vintage 2018 sees highest ever percentage of grenache, carignan, cinsaut for freshness, fruit, with 70% syrah, nearly 100% wholebunch. Concentrated, still relatively introvert but fine, silky feel, tender tannins to dark, savoury-edged fruit. Deserves time to unfurl. Year old French oak - Angela Lloyd.
