Wine tasting notes

Intense and deep garnet colour. Very high aromatic intensity where black fruit stands out. To the palate, it is warm, full bodied, expressive and fragrant, with a long fruity and spicy aftertaste.

Aug 2016 Reviewer : Luis Gutierrez - The 2010 Reserva is a textbook Rioja, and in fact it surprised me with a very classic profile. This is usually a blend of 85% Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% between Mazuelo and Garnacha; it fermented in stainless steel and matured in 50/50 French and American oak barrels for two years. It's a subtle vintage with very fine tannins. 2010 is a very good year for Rioja in general, but in Contino they consider it exceptional. This feels polished and developed with some forest floor and cigar box aromas. Very drinkable.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2011) - 91 pts

Bright ruby. Ripe cherry and black currant scents are complemented by suggestions of pipe tobacco, mocha and candied flowers. Plush, round and sweet in style, offering ripe dark fruit flavors and a suggestion of vanilla. Pliant tannins provide shape to the finish, which leaves suggestions of fruitcake and mocha behind. This rich wine could handle the most full-flavored red meat preparations

JancisRobinson.com (2010) - 17.5 pts

Tasted April 2016 - Very clean and pure expression showing fleshy red and blue berries, cedar notes, cloves, tobacco and tea leaves. It has moderate and integrated acidity, quite delicate on the palate for such an intense nose, classy earthy tannins and lingering sensation based on sweet spices. It is an authentic and pure rioja style, very good wine. (FC)

Wine Spectator (2011) - 91 pts

Smoky and meaty notes frame plum and currant flavors in this generous red, which is balanced and lively, broad-textured but lightfooted, with gentle tannins and bright orange-peel acidity. Drink now through 2021

James Suckling (2012) - 94 pts

Aromas of wet earth, spice and dark berry follow through to a full body, round and soft tannins and a long and decadent finish. Black olive and dark fruits. This is the only wine made from Contino in this year. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2010) - 92 pts

Earthy notes of plum and berry include a touch of leafy herbs. This is crisp, elegant and slightly tomatoey in feel, with dry herbal plum and berry flavors that end fresh and savory. There's nothing over the top about this classic Rioja. Drink through 2024.
