Wine tasting notes

Aromatic intensity with forest fruits such as blackberries and wild cranberries intermingled with black liquorice, vanilla and nutmeg from time spent in oak. The perfect balance of tannin and acidity.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 89 pts

Aug 2016 - Reviewer : Luis Gutierrez - The 2013 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% between Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa; it was fermented in stainless steel and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13-14 months. It feels like a very serious vintage for the bottling, and when I tasted it, the wine felt closed and a little backward; it has a lactic touch and fruit from the red spectrum denoting freshness. The palate felt similarly closed and ungiving, with fine tannins and good acidity. There is not great complexity or depth, fresh and accessible, without the structure that more serious vintages have. One for the short term.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014) - 90 pts

May 2017 - Josh Raynolds - Vivid ruby. Aromas of red berry liqueur and pungent flowers, backed by subtle vanilla and mocha nuances. Smooth and open-knit, offering sweet blackberry and cola flavors that are sharpened by a hint of cracked pepper. Weighty yet lively, showing very good closing focus and smooth tannins that come in late.

JancisRobinson.com (2010) - 16 pts

Tasted Oct 2014 - Mid crimson. A little simple, easy perhaps. Well balanced, vigorous, dense and GV.

Wine Spectator (2013) - 88 pts

This round red offers black cherry and plum flavors, with leafy and sandalwood accents. Light tannins and crisp acidity provide focus through the spicy finish. Drink now through 2020.

James Suckling (2013) - 92 pts

This is a ripe and floral red showing aromas of ripe plums, black cherries and currants. Full-bodied and round with concentrated, soft tannins and a long, fruity and floral finish. Tight and reserved with tension. Drinkable but better in 2019.

Wine Enthusiast (2011) - 89 pts

Earthy, lightly stalky aromas of leathery plum and currant are not overly assertive. This has a slightly gritty, grating feel, with acidity outmuscling body. Oaky flavors of vanilla and spice accent red plum and pie cherry, while this finishes dry, with lively acidity. Drink through 2020.
