Wine tasting notes

Intense dark cherry colour. Attractive aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and raspberries, blended together with hints of spice and vanilla. Complex and elegant on the palate with fine tannins and a good length.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2012) - 91+ pts

The 2012 Cune Gran Reserva, a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, matured in barrel for two years and was kept in bottle for three years before it was released. It had a lot of freshness, with notes of red fruit and an iron-like touch, reminiscent of beef blood and meat, austere and serious. The oak is pretty much in the background. The palate is sleek and polished, with fine tannins and a soft mouthfeel. Very good balance and drinkability. 50,000 bottles were produced in this excellent but low-yielding vintage

Wine Spectator (2012) - 90 pts

A velvety texture carries lively flavors of cherry, berry, vanilla and spice, supported by orange peel acidity and light, firm tannins in this alluring red. Balanced, in the traditional style.

James Suckling (2011) - 94 pts

A very powerful CUNE with so much blackberry, fresh mushroom and floral character. Big and tannic yet so polished at the same time. Even structure. It shows wonderful potential for ageing. Better in 2020.

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2010) - 92 pts

Brilliant ruby-red. Textbook Rioja scents of cherry, cedary oak, vanilla and candied rose, joined by a smoky nuance that builds in the glass. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering cherry liqueur, vanilla bean, licorice and floral pastille flavors that are lifted and braced by juicy acidity. The smoke and cherry notes echo strongly on the gently tannic finish, which shows excellent clarity and strong persistence.

Wine Enthusiast (2009) - 91 pts

This opens with leathery aromas of earthy plum and red-berry fruits. It’s medium in body and intensity, with racy, tomatoey acidity. Baked flavors are a bit stalky and echo the nose, while this gran reserva finishes ripe and easy. Drink through 2021. — M.S. (9/1/2015)
