Wine tasting notes

Intense cherry color. On the nose it has an exotic and fulfilling complexity. Perfect balance of red fruits (redcurrant, raspberry ...), liquorice and flavors from the different types of oak barrels used, such as thyme, cloves, vanilla and smoked. On the palate the wine exhibits the additional power and elegance with a dense but gentle tannin that leaves a long after taste with fruity and spicy notes.

Food matching

Perfect pairing with red meats, cheeses and stews. To break the rule we can also pair the wine with fish which go with sauce.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2012) - 92 pts

Aug 2016 - Reviewer : Luis Gutierrez - The Imperial range starts with the 2012 Imperial Reserva, the usual Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo that represent the Haro style of serious wines bottled in a Bordeaux bottle. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in oak barrels for two years. The nose is quite spicy, less balsamic and with more fruit than the Gran Reserva. The palate feels very balanced, with fine tannins and good freshness, even if it ended with some warm fruit. The texture is silky and even if it's approachable now, I'd wait a little for the oak aromas to get better integrated.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2012) - 92 pts

May 2017 - By Josh Raynolds - Deep ruby. Ripe cherry, black currant and pungent flowers on the expansive nose, accompanied by vanilla and pipe tobacco nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering intense, oak-tinged red and dark berry flavors and a hint of candied rose. Fine-grained tannins lend shape to the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and smooth, slow-building tannins. -- Josh Raynolds

JancisRobinson.com (2009) - 17.5 pts

Tasted Oct 2015 - Dark crimson. The best kind of vanilla on the nose. Sweet and composed with a tobacco-leaf savour and masses of potential. Very grown-up wine for the money.

Wine Spectator (2012) - 90 pts

April 2017 - Spicy notes of cigar box and sandalwood wreathe plum and dried currant flavors in this generous red, while underbrush and licorice layers glide over firm tannins and balsamic acidity. A savory style. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo.

James Suckling (2012) - 93 pts

July 2017 - Gorgeous aromas to this wine with flowers, truffles and subtle stones. Medium to full body, fine and silky tannins and a fresh, clean and tight style. One for early drinking. Enjoy now.

Wine Enthusiast (2012) - 93 pts

Cellar Selection - A ripe fruity set of berry and cassis aromas shows a slight hint of raisin. This is a stacked saturated wine with raw tannins and plenty of power. Blackberry and earthy notes finish stout and compact: this doesn't vary or waver on the back end. Best from 2019–2026.

Decanter (2009) - 94 pts

Best Riojas under £30 - Sourced entirely from CVNE’s vineyards in Villalba, this cuvée of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo is always great value, over- delivering on complexity and ageing potential. Refreshing and vigorous with silky tannins, subtle oak and textured blueberry fruit. TA
