Wine tasting notes

Juicy red and dark fruits (raspberries, cranberries, dark plums). Palette is voluptuous in body yet incredibly smooth with similar fruit notes and a touch of sweet vanilla. The wine finishes with lingering ripe black plum notes and a long length

Food matching

A big wine such as this needs something meaty. Try a seared Ribeye or roasted lamb

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2018) - 92 pts

Aged for eight months in oak (27% new; of which, 57% was French oak), the 2018 Proprietary Red Abstract is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers up bombastic notions of crushed black cherries, warm plums and blueberry compote with hints of dried herbs, spice box and new leather. Full-bodied, the palate explodes with rich, ripe black and blue berry preserves and a velvety texture, finishing long and vibrant - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Decanter (2018) - 94 pts

Orin Swift’s Dave Phinney must be like a kid in a sweet shop when given the keys to E&J Gallo’s vast roster of vineyards and told to take whatever fruit he wants. Here he has plundered Grenache, Syrah and Petite Syrah for the flagship Abstract blend. It’s a bold and assertive but brilliantly on-song – note-perfect in fact, with blackberry, red liquorice and earth combining to create a soulful, ethereal wine - Chris Wilson
