Apr 2017 - Neal Martin - The 2014 Maestro Red is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Malbec, 16% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, all the berries sorted, whole berry fermented with 18 months in barrel. It offers a smoky, cured meat-tinged bouquet that permeates through the mixture of red and black fruit, tobacco emerging with time. The palate is crisp with grainy tannin, a little austere at first but demonstrating good depth and backbone towards the finish that has a Medoc-like (Saint Julien) character.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2015)90 pts

Deep, saturated ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cassis and licorice are joined by pungent notes of herbs and black pepper. Densely packed, savory and dry, showing lovely texture and good ripeness to its cassis and licorice flavors. The wine's green element is still a bit intrusive but it's hard to argue with this wine's energy, intensity and grip. Finishes with very fine-grained tannins (2015)17 pts

Dusty, peppery and fragrant. Manages to be both chewy and juicy. Quite a grip but the fruit fills out the tannins. Big and bold and yet fresh. Not quite as edgy as some in this tasting but serious and finely made. (JH)

This delivers a vivid beam of anise, blackberry, plum and boysenberry pâte de fruit flavors, all stretching out over a roasted apple wood note that is easily absorbed through the lush, polished finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Editor's Choice - This Bordeaux-style blend, made from 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Malbec, 16% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is a complex and layered wine. Pleasant green notes of savory herbs, peppercorn, blackcurrant leaf and brambly berry drive the bouquet, while the medium-weight palate offers flavors of black-fruit skin, char and cigar box all framed by a crushed-velvet texture. It shows good grip, concentration and length, and should drink well through 2021.

Like the 2014 release, the 2015 Maestro Red is Cabernet Sauvignon-led, with support from Merlot,

Vinification Notes

Fruit was carefully hand sorted and naturally fermented, whole berry. Post fermentation maceration was allowed for two weeks, followed by gentle pressing. Maturation was for a total of 18 months in French oak, in a selection of 300 litre casks and 3000 litre Foudres. The wine was bottled with minimal fining and a minimal filtration.
