Winery Information

Deakin Estate

Purchased in 1967, Deakin Estate was planted to premium wine grapes which were sold as fruit until 1980 when a winery facility was built. By the time the Deakin Estate range was launched in 1994 some vines had achieved considerable age, whilst newer vines were being planted. Efforts are focused on producing fruit of the highest quality and expressive wines brimming with flavour and varietal character.

Expert Reviews

May 2014 - Reviewer : Lisa Perrotti-Brown. The 2013 Chardonnay has aromas of ripe apple and melons with a hint of toastiness. Light-bodied and lively in the mouth, this is a straightforward, no-frills Chardonnay at a bargain price. Drink it now. (2011)15 pts

Tasted May 2012 - Pale straw. Neat nose, very much in the current Australian vernacular. Fresh and lemony. Reasonable fruit weight and very clean but it seems a bit expensive relative to, say, a Mâcon Blanc. Damn that Aussie dollar.

Wine Spectator (2012)85 pts

June 15, 2013 - Light and focused, with pretty apple and citrus flavors that dance deftly. Drink now.

James Halliday (2016)86 pts

Stone fruit, dried mango and flecks of spice with soft acidity, it's simple but fresh.

The Deakin Estate range rarely disappoints in terms of value-for-money. This release is bang on. Good flavour, well balanced, clean through the finish, satisfying-enough. Peach, pear and citrus. Fraction of woodspice. No complaints.

Huon Hooke (2013)87 pts

This very quaffable everyday chardonnay is excellent value. With a light-yellow hue and fresh aromas of cashew nut, melon and light tropical-fruit touches, it seems to be very lightly oaked, if at all. The palate taste is soft, fruity and simple.

Ray Jordan (2013)90 pts

Another lovely release from this big volume producer making quality wine from this warm region. Light bodied but flavoursome, with a perfectly formed and balanced palate of light cream and nuts, and a little light citrus edge. 90/100

Vinification Notes

The 2019 vintage was hot and drier than usual, however adequate irrigation and careful canopy management across Deakin Estate’s Chardonnay vineyards allowed fruit to be harvested in optimum condition. To achieve a fresh crisp style, selected yeasts to promote aromatic character were used and selected parcels underwent lees stirring to build palate weight and add mouthfeel.
