Dog Point

Dog Point is situated in Marlborough at the north-east tip of the South Island of New Zealand. The Dog Point label was launched in 2004, with fruit from the 2002 vintage, by Marlborough wine industry pioneers Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James Healy. Ivan met James whilst they were both working at Cloudy Bay. They shared the same aspirations and wanted to create wines with a more “hands on” approach, and so Dog Point was born. Making wine from Sutherland's own vineyards which had been planted in the 1970's and 1980's, these are some of the oldest privately established vineyards in Marlborough. The name dates back to when Europeans first settled Marlborough and began to farm sheep. There were no boundary fences in those days and so “boundary keeping dogs” were used to protect the flock. But sometimes these dogs wandered off and formed their own wild pack, attacking the sheep they had originally been assigned to protect. In time the settlers were able to remove these wild dog packs and the area was named Dog Point. Although Ivan, Margaret and James remain involved in the business, the next generation of Sutherland's run the day to day operations. The vineyards are located in Marlborough's southern valleys, at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka Valleys, planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, on a mix of silty clay loams and clay loam influenced soils. The average age of their Sauvignon Blanc vines is 24 years old, but some are well over 30. The average age of their Chardonnay is 29 years, but their oldest are 40 years old, and their Pinot Noir vines date back to the early 1980's. The vineyards are farmed organically; they are New Zealand's largest certified organic vineyard by Biogro NZ. The Dog Point wines are made with uncompromising quality. They take a minimal intervention approach, using wild yeasts to ferment, and older French oak barrels. Their wines are vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. The Dog Point labels and bottle caps feature a stylized Te Kōuka tree, commonly known as the Cabbage Tree. These are one of the most distinctive trees in the New Zealand landscape. Dog Point recognise that, like their wines, these trees are a natural expression of the land on which they exist. Their wines are full of vibrant, pure crystalline fruit and drink beautifully on release but will also cellar gracefully.
