Domain Coursodon has become one of the top domaines of St Joseph over the last few years.
Jérôme represents the 5th generation of this small 15 ha domain. The steep vineyards are perfectly located mainly in the respected villages of the appellation, Mauves and Tournon. In fact the immaculate cellars are on the Mauves town square itself.
13ha of vines planted on steep hillsides are dedicated to making red wines of splendid flavours. From the Cuvée Silice offering lively, peppery palate and seductive Syrah spice to the more complex Olivaie. The Olivaie is a lieu dit whose older vines yield wines of rich dark blueberry, blackberry fruits with attractive earthy undertones and a mineral finish reminiscent of the granitic soil of the area.
Both reds are aged in oak (20% new for the Olivaie), and display the same silky quality to the tannins. Jérôme is a strong proponent of gentle and minimalist intervention during the vinification process as a way to respect the fruits and terroir expression.
Out of the remaining 2ha, the domaine produces a St Joseph Blanc Cuvée Paradis St Pierre. The vineyard located in Mauves is south facing and ensures the Marsanne enjoys optimal ripeness. Seductive tangerine aromas with honeyed undertones compliment the floral notes that nicely follow on the palate. The vinification in barrique with lees stirring gives a textural feel whilst the 12 months élevage (of which 10% is new) offers a spicy quality. The 5% Roussanne adds an exciting 'je ne sais quoi' to a most exquisite wine.
Through careful vine husbandry and mastery in the cellar Jérôme and father Pierre are definitely making classy St Joseph wines.
