Brian and Marion Smith sold their successful IT business in London in order to pursue their passion for making outstanding wines. Having searched for appropriate vineyard sites throughout Europe, they finally settled on South Africa?s Elgin Valley and founded Elgin Ridge. In 2007.Elgin Ridge is high on the slopes of a mountain, with endless panoramic views stretching over the vineyards to reveal the entire Elgin Valley. The Elgin Valley is less than an hour from Capetown and is blessed Elgin Valley is blessed with cold winters, warm summers and an elevated altitude, conditions ideal for vineyards. A close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean means that when temperatures rise in spring, the cool coastal breezes ensure vines are kept healthy and result in a long ripening period.Their philosophy of 'wine made naturally' begins in the vineyard and ends in the bottle. They produce only small volumes of wine from organically grown grapes producing as close to perfect fruit and can thus ensure each and every bottle with the Elgin Ridge label truly represents the ultimate in quality. The vines are on land 282 metres above sea level that was and still is completely untouched by chemicals. Farm vegetation is recycled and Elgin make their own compost to ensure the vines are truly natural, aided only with approved organic materials. With the help of winemaker, Niels Verburg and viticulturist Kevin Watt, Elgin Ridge have produced a stunning Sauvignon Blanc with a superb Pinot Noir to be launched shortly.
