Master Sommelier Vincent Gasnier, in his book How to Choose Wine, recommends this as a great wine for dishes containing black truffles, as well as for roast pork, among other roast meats. He especially likes it with chicken cacciatore. According to Malcolm Gluck and Mark Hix a great match is braised goose in red wine.

Wine tasting notes

A tank fermented and aged Dolcetto - open-knit floral and engaging, ripe but fresh with dense, gripping tannins. Black cherry, herb, spice and undergrowth flavours abound. A Dolcetto of depth and character.

Elio Altare

Although Elio Altare is best known for the superb Barolos he crafts from the Arborina and Brunate vineyards, his entire range is among the most consistently brilliant in Italy. Elio Altare is universally acknowledged to be one of the world's greatest winemakers. Wine Advocate # 203. Oct 2012. Reviewer : Antonio Galloni. The 2011 Dolcetto d'Alba is quite pretty in this vintage. Freshly cut flowers, spices, mint and licorice jump from the glass, adding quite a bit of complexity to the expressive varietal dark fruit. Utterly vinous and delicious, Altare's Dolcetto is a model of elegance and refinement. If you've ever wondered what a winery smells like during crush, this is it. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.In my opinion, one of the benchmarks of a truly great estate is exceptionally high, uncompromising quality across the board. Altare is without question one of those properties where every wine is well worth the effort of seeking out.

Nov/Dec 3. By Stephen Tanzer. Good bright red. Bitter cherry and licorice on the nose; as much red as black in character. Bright, pure and sharply focused, with limited flesh but excellent cut to the sappy black cherry fruit. Finishes with slightly drying tannins and very good length. Classic 2012 dolcetto. Tasted Sept 2012 - Bottled only 20 days ago. Purple ruby. Explosive Dolcetto themed nose of blueberry and with a touch of ink. Good freshness and expression of fruit. Very easy to enjoy. Gritty tannin. (WS)

Nov 2014 - The focused red berry and floral aromas and flavors highlight this firm, linear red. This has enough fruit and freshness to handle the grip, and should match well with food.
