Food Matching

This wine, which exhibits intriguing touches of both Australian Shirazes and French Syrah, is a versatile creature. Its spiciness makes it a good match for Asian dishes such as Chinese beef in black bean sauce, but you can also dress it down and serve it with good hamburgers or steaks. It prefers red meat and game to white meat and fish, and hard rather than soft cheeses. Roast root vegetables are a good choice for vegetarians. Avoid creamy sauces and smoked foods.

Wine tasting notes

The 2010 Syrah has a dense, pitch-black core with a vivid purple hue. The nose is magical, opening up with a potent fireworks display of intense blueberries, pepper ham and warm toast. The purity of fruit and brightness illuminates a plush palate, interwoven with luxurious cotton wool-like tannins. Almost thick in texture, the layered finish crescendos in a sweet spice and wood-smoke ensemble. Taught and alluring at the moment, time will bring even more complexity and pleasure.

Wine Spectator (2009)91 pts

Issue: Sep 30, 2011. Ripe and flashy, with bold blueberry, linzer torte and boysenberry fruit flavors, but they stay poised and fresh, with alluring spice and anise notes hanging through the creamy finish. Drink now. 275 cases made. ?JM.

John Platter (2010)4 stars

Seamless 2010 displays concentrated red & black fruit, fresh acidity, firm but fine tannins. Contains 5% viognier.

The Wine Gang (2006)93 pts, 93pts (2006) -"As smooth as a sweetly struck five iron from co-owner Ernie Els, this is up there with the very best Syrahs in South Africa. Smooth, rich, complex and harmonious with sweet vanilla oak, blackberry and blueberry fruit, a hint of liqourice and lovely length."

Vinification Notes
