Wine tasting notes

The fruit for this wine is sourced from vineyard sites around the Hawkes Bay. Vineyards in the north at Bay View provide the finished wine with ripe tropical fruit flavours while sites on the terraces above the Tutaekuri River at Puketapu add a more flinty, grapefruit note. These sites also provide a natural acidity to the blended wine. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning are all practiced in these vineyards in the pursuit of quality. This is a full bodied yet elegant style of Hawkes Bay Chardonnay exhibiting aromas of peach and melon intermingled with hints of butter, grapefruit and French oak spice

Dec 2016 - : Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The 2015 Chardonnay has a pronounced cedar and butterscotch-led nose with a core of apricot preserves, quince paste and apple pie. The palate is medium-bodied with a lashing of oak and spice characters, plus a good amount of spiced apple and stone fruit, finishing long. It's an old-school, oaky butterball, but nicely done, if you like this style.

Top vintages can offer irresistible value. The 2015 vintage (4*) was fully fermented and matured in French oak barriques (15 per cent new), and half the blend went through a softening malolactic fermentation. A classic regional style, it is a generous, sweet-fruited wine, mouthfilling, with youthful grapefruit and peach flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, fresh acidity and a slightly mealy, finely textured finish. It's one of the best-value Chardonnays on the market.

Vinification Notes

The individual vineyard parcels are kept separate and fermented in a mix of oak barriques and stainless tanks. Cultured and indigenous yeasts are utilised for fermentation and the finished wines left on lees until blending and bottling. A percentage of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the acidity.
