Wine tasting notes

This is a elegant and complex style of Pinot Noir showcasing the quality of the 2014 harvest. Very typical of Marlborough Pinot Noir, it exhibits aromatics and flavours of red fruits, plum and cherry with a subtle oak influence. Although a powerful wine, it has an elegance and underlying acidity typical of the harvest which makes it a fine match with food

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2012)90 pts #209 Oct 2013. Reviewer : Lisa Perrotti-Brown. Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2012 Pinot Noir shows a good intensity of crushed cranberry and red cherry aromas with underlying damp soil and dried thyme notes. Medium-bodied with plenty of juicy red berry flavors to fill the palate plus a solid backbone of finely grained tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and earthy. Drink it now to 2016+. Tasted Jan 2017 - Bright crimson. Racy with good energy and life. Layers with a little bit of oak still in evidence but not badly. Savoury, dry finish. Serious stuff.

James Suckling (2015)88 pts

A gently reductive edge is on offer here with brambly red cherries and cassis fruit. This has a neat palate that's bright and straight-shooting. Drink now.

Wine Front (2013)90 pts

Mint nougat, dark cherry and raspberry. Medium bodied, fruity and ripe, almost a ‘minerally’ feel, ripe powdery tannin, clean acidity and a pretty long finish. No sappy bitterness in this wine, which is great to see (and taste).

Michael Cooper (2015)4 stars

The 2015 vintage (4*) was hand-harvested in the Awatere Valley and Southern Valleys, and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (13 per cent new). Delicious from the start, it is mouthfilling and savoury, with gentle tannins and strong cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing good complexity.

Vinification Notes

This wine is a regional blend from selected vineyard sites in both the Wairau and Awatere valleys. The fruit is hand picked, de-stemmed and soaked before fermentation in open topped fermenters. Hand plunging is employed to gently extract tannin and colour from the grapes and when dry the fruit is pressed and run to both tank and barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in oak barriques for 12 months before blending and bottling.
