Familia Zuccardi

Zuccardi are a family business which was founded in 1963 by Italian immigrant Alberto Zuccardi, in Mendoza. Today third generation Sebastián Zuccardi leads the team; they are Argentina’s largest family run winery and a leading exporter of Argentine wines. There are two winery brands, the original estate where Alberto planted the family's first vines in the Uco Valley, eponymously named Zuccardi Valle de Uco, and Bodega Santa Julia in Maipú. Bodega Santa Julia was established in 1990, and was named after chief winemaker Jose Zuccardi’s only daughter. It is predominantly farmed organically, in fact Zuccardi are Argentina's leading certificated organic producer. Santa Julia have 180 hectares of certified organic vines planted at 1,950 metres above sea level in Maipú. In the Uco Valley there are two vineyards under vine for Santa Julia wines; the 85 hectare Finca Riberra and the 43 hectare Finca Flores, both planted at 2,920 metres. Santa Rosa, in the south-east of the province has 475 hectares of organically certified vines in 106 parcels. At Zuccardi's Uco Valley estate there are six vineyard sites under vine: Piedra Infinita at 1,100 metres, Canal Uco at 1,080 metres, Los Membrillos at 1,060 metres, Las Cuchillas at 1,400 metres, Las Cerrilladas at 1,360 metres, and Agua Las Jarillas at 1,385 metres. The state-of-the-art winery in the Uco Valley was inaugurated in 2016, a stunning tribute to the mountains which define the region and its soils. The wines are made in epoxy-free cement tanks with a tapered neck, the culmination of years of experimentation in pursuit of the ideal vessel. An astonishing array of grape varieties are gown throughout the vineyards, including some non-traditional varieties. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Syrah, Carmenere, Caladoc, Teroldego, Bonarda, Viognier, Semillón, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, Verdejo, Chenin and Torrontés all feature. This incredible diversity of grape varieties, microclimates, altitudes and soil types allows for a huge portfolio of wines to be produced in every style, including a range of natural and vegan wines, and Malamado - Argentina's first line of fortified wines. In 2008 a research and development area was initiated at the winery, dedicated to studying terroir, and the variables that affect wine quality. In this Sebastián says his goal “is not to strive for perfect wines, but wines that express the place, the region”, and with Zuccardi's superb range that is clearly being achieved, faithfully interpreting the terroirs of Mendoza and beautifully expressing their unique identities in the wines.
