Wine tasting notes

Cepparello is a powerful yet elegant wine as befits this outstanding vintage. Deeply coloured, with dark red fruit characters on the nose, well-integrated with fine-grained spicy perfumes from just enough oak, the intense nose gives way to a rich, generous palate and wonderful ripe structure.

Winery Information

Fattoria Isole e Olena

This estate, run by Paolo de Marchi, is yet another that has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades. Paolo's family, originally from Piedmont, purchased the estate in the 1960s. His attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery was the driving force that turned quality around..

Oct 2017 - Reviewer : Monica Larner - The 2014 Cepparello is truly beautiful, and it absolutely transcends the expectation of the vintage. This beautiful Sangiovese is full and generous on all levels. It offers an upfront presentation with opulent fruit, deep layering and fine elegance. This is a special kind of magic. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance followed by generous flavors of dark cherry, black currant, red rose and cured tobacco. I just love the way this wine integrates with the palate, becoming one in soul and substance. This is a wine to put in your cellar.

Oct 2016 - Isole e Olena's 2014 Cepparello is mind-blowingly beautiful. The product of a long, cool growing season with perfect weather at the end of the fall. Dark, savory and intensely mineral, the 2014 possesses remarkable depth and intensity. In 2014, the grapes reached full maturity at lower sugars than is the norm today. I tasted the 2014 from an assortment of barrels. If the finished wine is like the wine I tasted from barrel, the 2014 Cepparello will be one of the big surprises of the vintage. I love the mid-palate depth here. -- Antonio Galloni

Tasted June '17 - 100% Sangiovese. Dark garnet. Initial impression is sweet oak spice but with air the tangy fruit emerges. On the palate too there is plenty of oak sweetness and a touch of chocolate. Underneath there is fresh and lively fruit that still needs time - for my palate - to shed the oak sweetness. Fresh but with a milk-chocolate aftertaste. Smooth and rounded and deep. (JH)

Oct 31, 2014 - Well-marked by oak, black cherry, blackberry, tobacco and iron flavors, this is rich and firm, picking up black tea and smoke notes on the long finish. Shows latent power. Sangiovese. Best from 2016 through 2025.

A firm and silky red with plum and chocolate character throughout. Lean and fine textured. Give the wine a year or two to soften the acidity. Drink in 2019.

Delicious and loaded with finesse, this offers enticing scents of rose, violet, chopped herb, dark-skinned berry and a whiff of exotic spice. The smooth structured palate delivers juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise, and white pepper alongside polished tannins. Hints of pomegranate and pipe tobacco close the lingering finish. Drink through 2027.

Vinification Notes

The wine was 100% barrel-aged in 1/3 in new French and American oak (15% of total), 1/3 one year old oak and 1/3 in two year old oak. The wine remained in barrel for 14-18 months before bottling.
