Felsina Berardenga

This is a story of passion and belief. In 1966 Domenico Poggiali acquired the estate which would become Fèlsina to indulge his passion for hunting. This was at a time when viticulture was struggling in Italy, but Domenico realised the potential the land offered for wine production, and began to expand the vineyards and wine cellar with his son Giuseppe. He invested in a young team and in just a few years expanded the land under vine to more than 40 hectares. In the 1970's Domenico's son-in-law Giuseppe Mazzocolin joined the family business, tasked with commercial development, and the way to success was paved. In collaboration with Franco Berabei, one of Italy's leading consulting oenologists, and their friend Luigi Veronelli, an Italian gastronome, wine critic and philosopher, Fèlsina saw international recognition. Giuseppe's oldest son Giovanni joined the business in 1990. Fèlsina is located in Castelnuovo di Berardenga, on the south-east edge of the Chianti Classico appellation, north-east of Sienna. They embrace a biodynamic approach with their now 95 hectares under vine. The soils are essentially rocky but on higher ground there is quartz with the compact clay and limestone known as alberese, mixed with alluvial pebbles, whereas on the edge of the Coli Senesi in the direction of Crete Senesi, the soils are characterised by sandstone and loam with mineral-rich marine sediments. Altitudes range between 320 and 420 and metres above sea level. Each vineyard is farmed according to its individual microclimate, altitude, aspect, soils and Sangiovese clone. Sangiovese is the flagship grape variety, and for decades massali selections have been cultivated to produce numerous Sangiovese clones and rootstocks, which provide infinite possibilities for the wines. Fèlsina means “land of Light” and Domenico chose this name for his estate to showcase the richness of the Italian terroir. At Fèlsina new technology goes hand in hand with tradition and, with Franco Berabei still at the helm, powerful, beautifully structured, yet elegant Chianti's are produced, strongly identifying with their unique territory.
