Wine tasting notes

A core intesity of red fruit flavors and lifted violet aromas remain the signature of Malbec from our Remolinos Vineyard. This is exquisitely balanced by freshness of acidity and an elegant integration of French oak which adds complexity to the rich mid palate of this vintage.

Winery Information

Finca Decero

Decero, meaning 'from scratch', was born of a bare patch of land and a family's love affair with wine. Winemaking in Thomas Schmidheiny's family goes back to his grandparents in Switzerland and, just as Napa had inspired his mother Adda in the 1970s, so too did the Agrelo sub-appellation in Mendoza capture the heart and mind of Thomas when traveling over the Andes into Argentina 20 years later. In Agrelo, perhaps now considered the source of Argentina?s finest red wines, Thomas instinctively.. read more

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2014)89 pts

Dec 2016 Luis Gutierrez - The fruit-driven and straightforward 2014 Malbec Remolinos Vineyard shows the ripeness of the vintage, and the aromas gravitate towards the riper side of the spectrum, with a jammy touch and some decayed flowers. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, with moderate acidity.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014)88 pts

Dark bright red. Reticent aromas of bitter cherry, blackberry, raspberry, licorice and mocha. Sweet and fine-grained, with harmonious acidity framing and lifting the flavors of blackberry, raspberry, violet and menthol. A serious wine with a restrained sweetness. Finishes with smooth tannins and good breadth.

James Suckling (2014)92 pts

A fresh and delicate malbec with light raisin, currant, blackberry and floral aromas and flavors. Tangy. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2013)89 pts

Roasted, gritty, herbal berry aromas are more rustic than polished. This feels big but obtuse. Flavors of blueberry and savory plum are a touch salty and leathery, while this tastes of briny blue fruits on an oaky, grabby finish.

Tim Atkin (2014)92 pts

The Remolinos Vineyard appears to be a very good site for all of the Bordeaux varieties, but Malbec really stands out here. Perfumed and well balanced, like all of Tomás Hughes’ reds, this is stylish and sensitively oaked. Balanced and refreshing, it has notes of violets and pepper and fine-grained tannins. 2016-20

Vinification Notes

The spring leading up to the 2010 vintage was particularly cool which delayed veraison and resulted in lower yields of more concentrated fruit and higher acidity in the wines. Otherwise, the days were of average warmth without any peaks in temperature so even ripening occurred with good simultaneous development of fruit and sugar ripeness. 2010 Malbec shows a richer texture than other vintages due to the concentrated berries but the great structure of a harmonious season. Cluster selection pre-destemmer; berry selection post-destemmer. 25-30 days total maceration; 5-7 days cold soak; 10 days fermentation in small wide stainless steel tanks. 78°F for most aromatic parcels and 86°F for parcels with more concentration to derive more texture; 15-18 days extended maceration. Gently basket pressed before 90% goes into French oak barrels (30% new) for MLF and 14 months maturation. 10% remains in tank to preserve the delicate violet aromatics.
