Fontodi

Fontodi is located in the valley that lies south of the town of Panzano, in the heart of Chianti Classico. This area is called the “Conca d'Oro” or the “Golden Shell” due to its natural amphitheatre shape, and here the terroir is quite special. There is an incredible warm and dry microclimate with marked diurnal temperatures, which together with a combination of high altitude, good light and calcareous-clay-schist soils, create a fantastic area to cultivate quality grapes. Fontodi was bought by Domiziano and Dino Manetti in 1968, and has remained in the family ever since. The estate had been in Chianti for centuries, but had fallen into disrepair, and at the time of the Manetti's acquisition only consisted of a few hectare of vines. They restored the crumbling old farmhouse and replanted the vineyards, transforming it into one of Italy's most impressive estates. Since 1980 Giovanni Manetti has been at the helm. The Manetti's had always made wine, but their principal business was, and still is, the production of terracotta tiles at their factory in Feronne, a business that was founded in 1780. The skill that they bring to their exceptional superior-quality tiles has been transferred to their winemaking. A new cellar was built in 1998 which is immaculately managed. Now 70 hectares of certificated organic vineyards are under vine, farmed with biodynamic principles. Over 90% of the planting is Sangiovese. The grapes are all hand-picked and they use native yeasts for fermentation. The wines are judiciously aged in French oak barrels. These elegant, silky-textured wines have great depth of flavour.
