Fowles Wine

Fowles Wine

Fowles is a family owned estate and in their own words are “a motley crew of raconteurs and entrepreneurs, auctioneers, law men, farmers, hunters and winemakers”. They are all united by their passion for wine. In 2005 Matt Fowles and his family bought a winery out of administration, took the plunge into the wine business, and haven't looked back since. Matt is a former lawyer turned vigneron, and he works with a young team. They cultivate two sustainably farmed vineyards; Upton Run and Billi's, which cover 360 acres in the Strathbogie Ranges. This cool climate, high altitude wine region in the Australian state of Victoria is located north of the Great Dividing Range, about an hour and a half drive north-east of Melbourne. The vineyards are planted between 430 and 550 metres above sea level on decomposed granite interspersed with massive ancient granite boulders, dating back over 360 million years. Although the composition of soils are even across the vineyards, the undulating topography dictates that there are various microclimates and sunlight exposures, meaning they have scope for many different blending options. They cultivates an array of grape varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Arneis, Pinot Grigio, Vermentino, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sangiovese, Shiraz and Mourvedre. In their modern state-of-the-art winery they have a barrel hall with over a 1,000 barrels, some 140 years old. Fowles are regarded as one of Australia's best cool climate producers, crafting light and fresh white wines of great fruit intensity and minerality, and highly perfumed, deeply coloured red wines that are powerful yet restrained and elegant. One of Fowles' innovations is a range of wines they have blended specifically to pair with wild game. Matt is a keen hunter, and enjoys eating game meats, which he says have a more intense flavour and a different texture than farmed animals, and he wanted to echo these characteristics in the wines. Consequently, the “Ladies who Shoot their Lunch” and “Are You Game” range, are made from his coolest vineyards plots, giving an acidity and fragrance, and a depth of flavour and texture which is the perfect foil for game meats. In 2010 Fowles were the first winery in Victoria to win the VISY Great Australian Shiraz Challenge trophy for Australia's Best Shiraz. Fowles was named a”Winery to Watch” by Wine Spectator – keep watching!
