Gerovassiliou

Vangelis Gerovassiliou founded his winery in 1981. It is located on the slopes of Epanomi, about 25 kilometres south-east of Thessaloniki in Central Macedonia. Vangelis studied at the University of Thessaloniki's School of Agriculture, and furthered his oenological and vinicultural studies at the University of Bordeaux. He worked as an oenologist at Domaine Porto Carras, one of the most historic wineries in Greece, and it was here that he resurrected the ancient, but nearly extinct Malagousia grape variety. Vangelis then began to revive this family vineyard by first planting Malagousia, and Ktima Gerovassiliou (ktima means estate in Greek) was born. The first wines were produced in 1986. In 1999 a state-of-the-art winery, built in the heart of the vineyard was completed. The estate stretches over 72 hectares in a single, meticulously tended vineyard. There is a specific microclimate here. The vineyard is surrounded by the sea on three sides, with the west side facing the Thermaic Gulf, Mount Olympus, and the beaches of Pieria, so the Mediterranean climate is constantly tempered by sea and mountain breezes. The soils are mainly sandy, with some underlying clay and calcareous rocks, rich in sea fossils. All the grapes are hand-picked. The indigenous white Greek grape varieties of Malagousia and Assyrtiko and the red Limnio, Mavoudi, Mavrotragano and Xinomavro are cultivated with the international Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah and Merlot, and Vangelis continues to study and experiment with both Greek and foreign grape varieties. Tradition goes hand-in-in-hand with modern methods in the vineyard and in the winery. All reds and some whites are stored for a significant amount of time in two underground maturing areas, where wines age in hundreds of French oak 225 litre barriques. But the dynamic Vangelis didn't stop with Ktima Gerovassiliou. In 1998 he created Ktima Biblia Chora at Kokkinochori in the Kavala region of Northern Greece; a venture with oenologist Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. Here 48 hectares of vineyards surround the modern winery. In 2014 Ktima Dyo Ipsi was created with the purchase of the Estate Kokkoli in Agiou Andreas in the Peloponnese. In 2017 a collaboration with the oenologist Ioanna Vamvakoudi resulted in the creation of Mikra Thira, the first winery on Therasia, a small volcanic island in the island group of Santorini. The following year the small family winery of Titos Eftichidis in Goumenissa in Central Macedonia was added. Vangelis' latest venture is a collaboration with Vassilis Tsaktsarlis and wine importer Takis Soldatos to form Escapades Winery in South Africa's Stellenbosch. Gerovassiliou produces wines of international claim year after year, which express the typical characteristics of the Epanomi terroir - they are certainly something a little bit different!
