Wine tasting notes

Bright, deep crimson; a powerful, intense yet perfectly balanced array of black, blue and red berry fruits interwoven with touches of vanilla, cedar and graphite. A medium to full-bodied wine densely packed with black fruit and spice, with firm, grainy tannins and just enough acid to lift the long finish.

While the Innocent Bystander wines are made from grapes grown across the Yarra, the Giant Steps wines are produced exclusively from single vineyard sites. Grapes are selected from estate-owned and leased vineyards, as well as from long-term contracted growers. Feb 2015 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - A Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux Blend sporting a very deep opaque purple color, the 2013 Harry's Monster offers notes of crushed black plums, blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of vanilla, toast, cedar, pencil lead and cloves. Medium-bodied, the palate is densely packed with black fruit and spice box flavors with firm, grainy tannins and just enough acid to lift the long, somewhat woody finish. It really needs time to show its true colors but this is a very promising young wine!

Tasted Sep 2015 - Bordeaux blend. Mid crimson. Bright sculpted fruit. No dominant variety and a certain sweetness as well as muscle. Still quite youthful. (JR)

My wife commented “Nowhere on the bottle does this say from which grapes it is made. I’d never buy it at the bottleshop.” Or something like that, because she doesn’t really talk with my garbled syntax. Anyway, it’s Cabernet Sauvignon (72%), Petit Verdot (15%) and Merlot (13%). Redcurrant, raspberry and blackcurrant – summer berry pudding-ish – with dried herb, aniseed, cedar and a bit of the old Fry’s Chocolate Cream. It’s fresh, medium weight and even with gentle grainy tannin, nutty oak spice, and a long clean finish. Tastes like Cabernet too, not something else. Like it. Just over the line for 94 points.

Vinification Notes

Fruit was hand picked, destemmed and crushed to small open fermenters. An eight day warm ferment followed. Fruit was then hand plunged twice daily and underwent a daily rack and return for two weeks. On dryness, the cap was submerged for two to three weeks to integrate tannins. The wine was racked off gross lees to 225 litre French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation. 40% was new, with the remainder second and third use. After 15 months it was gravity bottled on the 1st of August 2014.
