Wine tasting notes

Black cherries and winter fruits dominate the nose - which is pure, lively and captivating. Rich and rounded on the palate, the Grenache adds blackberry tones and fresh acidity whilst the old-vine Shiraz adds structure, hints of liquorice and bright fruit.

Glaetzer

The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer ?Habsburg? and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. June 2016 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown -A blend of 78% Shiraz and 22% Grenache, the 2014 Wallace has is medium garnet in color with a gorgeous nose of black raspberries, kirsch and lavender plus black pepper, cloves and anise hints. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is soft, pepper-laced and seductive with impressive persistence and a lively acid and herb lift to the finish.

Mar 2016 by Josh Raynolds - Bright purple. Heady, smoke- and spice-tinged aromas of dark berry liqueur, candied licorice and mocha, with a peppery quality adding urgency. Supple, broad and seamless, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and cassis flavors and a hint of vanilla. In a lush, decadent style but not at all outsized. Finishes smooth, smoky and long, with repeating spiciness and velvety tannins. These vines range from 60 to more than 110 years of age.

Jan '15 - A wine that speaks more of shiraz than grenache, although the latter has done some lightening. Rich, dark blackberries and gentle tar. Dark, mineral fruits with strong mocha oak. The palate has a fluffy, fleshy, supple tetxure. Bright summer berry fruits, fine tannins and a lick of espresso to finish. Drink now.

Roughly two-thirds Shiraz and one-third Grenache, this is a full-bodied, lush example of Barossa Valley product. Hints of mint and cracked pepper add nuance to the ripe raspberry fruit, while spice and red-fruit nuances linger on the supple yet spine-tingling finish. Drink now–2020 for its youthful exuberance.

78% 60-80yo shiraz from the Ebenezer district and 22% 80-110yo grenache. Definitely a cut above many Barossa Valley blends, and I like the back label description of 'decadent yet reserved, rich yet restrained'. I would simply add no confectionary notes, and wonder at the gift horse price.

Barossa shiraz grown on 60-80 year old vines. Barossa grenache grown on 80-100 year old vines. 69/31% blend. 16 months in oak, 80% French but 20% American. Amazing that you can get a red like this for roughly 20 bucks, from old vine material like this. We’re indebted to the folks of yesteryear; they left their mark. Red and black berries, a slip of anise, maybe some dried herbs, definitely some woody spice. You know the drill. It’s juicy and well-balanced and firm-ish to close; not too heavy and not too light; perfect for hooking into. Massaged to perfection.

Vinification Notes

We ferment and mature the Grenache component in stainless steel to keep the freshness and animation of the fruit. This blends well with the earthy Barossa Valley Shiraz characters. As with all Glaetzer wines, the key is balanced extraction, not maximum extraction. Matured in oak for 12 months ; 80% French, 20% American .
