Wine tasting notes

Pure, ripe plum and strawberry fruit flavors underscored by a crisp acidic note and a hint of earth mark this charming, succulent wine, set in a supple texture supported by sweet, soft tannins. Michele Chiarlo selects his Barbera d'Asti from the best of these vineyards planted in older vines and harvested at peak maturity. Vinified at the Chiarlo cellars in Calamandrana, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is then aged a least one year in oak. The result is a brilliant ruby-red wine with an intense yet airy, vinous bouquet and a medium-bodied, bone-dry robustness that is exceptionally pleasant on the palate. The best vintages, with age, tend to garnet in color, and show a velvety, harmonious quality of considerable elegance.

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2010) - 88 pts

June '13.Oct 2012 - The 2010 Barbera d’Asti Superiore Le Orme is an attractive, fleshy wine loaded with class and personality, especially within its price range. Clean, mineral notes frame expressive dark fruit in this vibrant, highly appealing Barbera. This is a highly representative example of the taut style of Barbera that emerges from Asti.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2015) - 90 pts

The 2015 Barbera d'Asti Superiore Le Orme is an absolutely delicious, entry-level Barbera from Chiarlo. Blueberry jam, plum, spice, licorice and lavender infuse this pliant, expressive Barbera. I can't think of too many wines that deliver this much pure pleasure at such a modest price. Readers looking for a budget-friendly red will find much to admire. (2011) - 16 pts

Tasted June 2013 - Black cherry aromas. Very smooth and without any obvious oak. Dry finish. Ripe soft tannins – often sold by the glass in North America.

Wine Spectator (2015) - 88 pts

Rich, vibrant and smooth, this red evokes black cherry, black currant and almond flavors, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit and spice. Drink now through 2020

James Suckling (2016) - 90 pts

This shows intense, but also some very fresh notes of blackberry compote, citrus and bracken. Medium body, zippy acidity and a fine, clear-cut finish. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2015) - 90 pts

Ripe black-skinned fruit, dark spice, underbrush and roasted coffee aromas lead the nose of this wine, along with an earthy note of game. The rounded, chewy palate is loaded with black cherry, black raspberry, baking spice and truffle flavors set against fresh acidity and polished tannins.
