Wine tasting notes

Carati literally menas 'barrels'. This is an old vines cuvée reared for 6 months in barriques and 12 months in large oak 'botti'. It has all of the incisive, razor sharep qualities of Barbera combined with a tremendous lacy, silky quality and absolutely brims with crushed blueberry, blackberry, mineral and cedar flavours.

Food matching

Master Sommelier Vincent Gasnier, in his book How to Choose Wine, recommends this as a great wine for dishes containing black truffles, as well as for roast pork, among other roast meats. He especially likes it with chicken cacciatore. According to Malcolm Gluck and Mark Hix a great match is braised goose in red wine.

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2003) - 92 pts

Italy Report # GX. Apr 2007. Reviewer : Antonio Galloni. Scavino?s 2003 Barbera d?Alba Affinato in Carati is a seamless beauty packed with masses of plummy dark fruit that blossom onto the palate supported by a lovely vein of minerality that provides freshness. It offers notable expansiveness, a sumptuous, irresistible texture and stunning balance. Highly recommended. Drink 2008 - 2016.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2001) - 89 pts

Nov/Dec 04. By Stephen Tanzer. Bright medium ruby. Oaky aromas of black fruits, licorice and violet. Juicy, intense and penetrating; supple and shapely, with solid backbone. Not especially fleshy or sweet but very fresh and serious barbera. This represents a selection of Scavino's best lots of barbera (this special cuvee was not made in 2002).

JancisRobinson.com (2004) - 17 pts

Published : 25-Oct-2007. Dark purple. Heady and very ripe. Rich and smooth and voluptuous. A big wine that certainly delivers. When to Drink : 2009 to 2012.

Wine Spectator (2001) - 87 pts

Issue: Feb 28, 2006. A well-balanced red, with juicy berry, oak and a hint of fresh herb. Medium-bodied, with fresh, tangy oak on the palate and a clean, minerally finish. Drink now. 500 cases made.
