Wine tasting notes

The nose shows dark, sour cherry. Dark berries, spiciness and herbs linger on the palate. The wine has great purity of fruit with a hint of wet-stone minerality and a velvet soft finish.

Great with Game Bird with Red Wine Sauce, Beef Fillet and Pork Loin

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2015) - 90 pts

The 2015 Dolomite Cabernet Franc, which comes from lower-lying areas in Polkadraai and matured in fifth and sixth-fill barrels, has a punchy bouquet with smoke and Tuscan cured meat infusing the black and red fruit. There is lovely definition and vigor on display here. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, touches of bell pepper and oregano infusing the black fruit, with good backbone and structure on the finish. It needs to partnered with some hearty meat dishes to get the most out of this.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014) - 89 pts

May 2017 - Ruby-red. Aromas of plum, woodsmoke, tobacco leaf and pepper. Suave and vibrant on the palate, showing noteworthy spicy intensity to the red berry, graphite and tobacco flavors. Maintains its penetrating character through a long, ripely tannic finish. There's very good flavor development here, but this wine is in a cooler-vintage style. Finishes with slightly dry-edged tannins. -- Stephen Tanzer

JancisRobinson.com (2011) - 16.5 pts

Tasted Sept 13 - Cheaper than the Family version. Low skin contact. A Cabernet Franc for people who don't like Cabernet Franc! Fresh, soft and fragrant.

Wine Spectator (2015) - 89 pts

A bright, fresh tobacco leaf note streaks through the core of cherry and damson plum fruit. Light-bodied, with a racy finish that lets an olive accent chime in.

Wine Enthusiast (2015) - 91 pts

Editors Choice - Earthy tones of fresh tilled soil, licorice root and sweet char lead the bouquet of this wine, grounded by the ripe black-fruit core. Velvety in texture, yet somewhat firm in structure, the palate boasts flavors of ripe black cherry and berry that carry through to the finish alongside hints of curing spice and hickory smoke. Drink now–2021.

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2014) - 4 stars

Fruit-driven 2014 almost unruly, with boundless berry & spicy tealeaf notes, lively acidity & firm but fine tannin. Similar joie de vivre to 2012, will please for good few years.

Tim Atkin (2015) - 92 pts

Two sites on granite supply the grapes for this elegant, floral, easy-going Cabernet Franc, aged in older wood to allow the fruit to sing. Pure and very true to the variety, with violet and green herb notes and crunchy, black cherry fruit. 2017-21
