Wine tasting notes

This garnet-colored wine stands out on the nose for its touches of ripe black fruit, such as plum and cherry, continuing with red paprika, saline notes, leather and wood. On the palate it has a soft and sweet entry, with silky tannins and hints of tobacco. It has a medium acidity that provides freshness thanks to the Syrah it contains, and it has a long and persistent finish.

Food matching

Due to its high complexity, this wine has a wide range of dishes for pairing. Possessing a great body and structure it’s a great complement for any red meat. The subtlety of aromas and flavors would be a perfect partner for Italian pastries or a potato and pumpkin gnocchi gratin with Roquefort cheese sauce and parmesan.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2011) - 91 pts

Dec 2015 - Luis Gutierrez - The 2011 Finis Terrae has a classical nose of pencil shavings, graphite, aromatic herbs and blackberries. It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged in new French barriques for 22 months, which is not really that noticeable. The palate is medium to full-bodied with abundant, slightly grainy tannins, good acidity and freshness. This is my favorite Cousiño today.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2011) - 90 pts

Deep ruby. Bright and energetic on the nose, offering aromas of fresh cherry, blackcurrant and peppery spices. Firm and focused on entry, with a juicy quality to its red and dark berry and spicecake flavors. A smoky nuance emerges with aeration and carries through the smooth, gently tannic finish, which shows very good clarity and persistence. This graceful wine is approachable now but also has the balance to age.

JancisRobinson.com (2011) - 17 pts

Tasted Feb 2015 - Already looks a little ruby at the rim. Lusciously ripe and with a layer of dustiness that just adds interest. So much better value than the white version! Great balance. Density but no overripeness. Some clean freshness on the finish. Velvety texture. Tannins definitely there with a certain medicinal quality of fruit but they are reasonably well hidden. GV

James Suckling (2011) - 92 pts

July 2015 - Aromas of blackberries, wild mushrooms and tobacco. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. A red with finesse and length. Cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Better in 2017

Miscellaneous (2011) - 96 stars

Nicks.com.au - "Totally opaque black dark red colour with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Perfumed aromas of ripe blackcurrants and dark mulberry laced with hints of violets are followed by nuances of cigar box, faint earthy tobacco and spice. Full bodied the palate possesses magnificent fruit richness in combination with finesse and refinement. Generous flavours of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherries and mulberries flood the mouth over a back drop of cedar, light earthy tobacco and spice. Very fine grained, almost velvet like, yet structurally firm tannins provide the perfect framework. Excellent length and persistence with a long conclusion of ripe blackcurrant, mulberry, cedary tobacco, subtle earth and spice."
