Wine tasting notes

Mature, gamey nose, almost Pinot in style but the palate a bit hollow after such excitement. Delicate violet notes on the nose followed by attractive, violet fruit. Delicately made. Toffee smells on the nose and a pleasant palate with slightly ageing fruit and interesting flavour of mushroom on the finish. Complex, deep and delicious blend of tarry blackcurrant fruit with underlying richness of dried fig.

Food matching

Ideally with spicy meat and fish dishes, matured cheeses and game.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2009) - 89 pts

Wine Advocate # 195. Jun 2011. Reviewer : Antonio Galloni. The 2009 Carignano del Sulcis Grotta Rossa is another sleek, elegant wine. The estate is especially skilled with Carignano, and that comes through in spades, even in this entry-level bottling. Dark red fruit, crushed flowers, leather and licorice are nicely supported on a mid-weight frame. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding lift and proportion. Drink: 2011 - 2017.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2015) - 89 pts

Bright red. Aromas and flavors of juicy red fruit and dark berries are complemented by fresh and clean inky and graphite nuances. Simple and easygoing but very enjoyable and fun to drink.

Wine Spectator (2014) - 88 pts

Pretty dried rosemary and thyme accents complement the juicy sun-dried black cherry and currant fruit in this medium-bodied red, layered with light, creamy tannins and green olive and smoke notes. Fresh. Drink now through 2020

James Suckling (2015) - 92 pts

Another fresh and linear carignano with dried berry, light bark and spice character. Medium body, tight and focused. Flavorful finish. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2012) - 89 pts

Best Buy - Vibrant and spicy, this savory red delivers aromas and flavors of ripe blackberry, black cherry, ground pepper and chopped Mediterranean herb. Firm, fine-grained tannins support the juicy flavors. An anise note backs up the finish.
