Wine tasting notes

Rich, ripe nose, almost perfumed wine with a delicious creamy character on the palate and bags of soft ripe blackcurrant fruit. The acidity is all there, balanced against soft, full tannins and there is great structure and mouthfeel. Succulent, round and complex.

Food matching

The best accompaniment to this wine, try any one of these: teriyaki pork chops and Thai vegetables, pan-seared filet mignon with roasted potatoes and Merlot sauce or a grilled sirloin steak with anise- basil butter.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2014) - 90 pts

Dec 2017 - The 2014 Carignano del Sulcis Riserva Rocca Rubia opens to a dark garnet color and a firm, mid-weight style. The bouquet allows for neat and linear fruit tones with dried cherry and black currant. You also get a good dose of balsam or medicinal herb and cola. This wine is broad and long in terms of mouthfeel, and its structure has been enhanced by 12 months of aging in neutral oak barrels. The mouthfeel evenly blankets the entire palate.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014) - 93 pts

Very deep ruby. Grapey nuances add freshness and early accessibility to the dense, steely blueberry and plum aromas and flavors. A hint of tar and herbs adds further complexity on the vibrant, multilayered finish. Very smooth and dense tannins really make this wine stand out among the many fine Santadi reds this year. -- Ian D'Agata

Wine Spectator (2014) - 90 pts

An elegant, medium- to full-bodied red, with fine tannins married to flavors of dried strawberry and baked black cherry fruit, fig cake and dried thyme, revealing an underpinning of fresh, loamy earth. Creamy finish. Drink now through 2023

James Suckling (2014) - 91 pts

A fresh and clean red with berry and orange peel character. Medium body, fine tannins and a linear finish. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2012) - 91 pts

Jan 2015 - Smooth and delicious, this delivers layers of crushed black cherry, ripe raspberry, licorice, ground pepper and chopped Mediterranean herb. Round, ripe tannins lend it a velvety texture.
