Wine tasting notes

A youthful fresh wine with quince and pear drop flavours. Earlier picked freshness shows on palate with crunchy green apple and grapefruit flavours. Good mouthfeel and appetisingly tangy finish. Style: Fresh and Fruity.

Winery information

Ken Forrester

Ken Forrester represents the true pioneering spirit of the post-apartheid South African wine industry. Drawing on the examples of top Loire whites, he has used his uniquely placed Chenin vines to maximum effect and has single-handedly led a Chenin Blanc quality revolution. As a result these wines have achieved iconic status worldwide. At the top end there is the beautifully balanced barrel-fermented Chenin FMC, made from fruit grown at Ken?s Stellenbosch vineyard, and the silky fine red The Gypsy, made from low yielding vines. Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate writes - "Whilst I have enjoyed more than my fair share of legendary Bordeaux wines, Ken Forrester provides a pertinent reminder that great Cabernet can be made for under ten-dollars. You could count the number of Bordeaux Ch.x offering equivalent QPR on one finger. This, and the rest of his portfolio represent everything that can be achieved in South Africa: cleanly made, expressive wines at unbeatable prices interspersed with one of two flagship wines that mean business. If you have never tried South African wine before, then I cannot think of a better place to start than here."

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2016) - 85 pts

The 2016 Petit Chenin Blanc has a crisp apple blossom and citrus aroma that is delightful. The palate is fresh and vibrant, a little waxy in texture with a touch of peach on the finish. Job done. This is a bargain.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2016) - 87 pts

Bright, light yellow. Lively aromas of fresh pineapple, grapefruit, pear and white flowers. Juicy, spicy, dry and light on its feet. Lean but refreshing wine for easy quaffing; lacks the texture, nuance and depth for a higher score, though. Finishes firm and cool, with mint and citrus lift.

Wine Spectator (2017) - 89 pts

This has a slightly rounded edge, with meringue and lemon chiffon notes, but it's fresh and lively overall, with pretty yellow apple, fennel and green plum flavors holding sway through the finish.

James Suckling (2017) - 90 pts

Aromas of tinned pears and sliced apples follow through to a full body with dense fruit. A crisp finish.

Wine Enthusiast (2011) - 87 pts

A fresh and fruity wine that’s ready to drink now. This has attractive aromas and flavors of green apple and lime followed by a clean, mouthwatering finish. There’s a soft herbal streak that adds depth to the nose and mouth. — L.B. (7/1/2012)

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2015) - 3.5 stars

Sourced widely, unwooded 2015 is a summery fruit salad of a wine, refreshing with pear, peach, melon, apple & even a hint of tangy grapefruit.
