Wine tasting notes

The 2014 release of this intriguing blend delights the nose with a charming bouquet of enticing aromas of fresh Meyer lemon, fuzzy peach, ripe honeydew melon and yellow plum, mingled with touches of citrus blossom and white tea. The clean, vibrant palate enters with juicy pomelo, sweet lychee and honeyedtangerine fruits, balanced by vibrant acidity and hints of yellow apple and key lime pie that last through the crisp and refreshing finish. With its balanced acidity, this versatile wine pairs well with a number of dishes, from light salads to seafood to, most notably, foods with a hint of spiciness - its subtle sweetness provides balance alongside a touch of heat. Try Chenin Blanc + Viognier with a flavorful Thai curry, a sushi dish, such asa spicy tuna roll, or seared halibut.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2014) - 90 pts

Aug 2015 - Robert Parker - A consistent, big-time winner in the value sweepstakes, the 2014 Chenin Blanc / Viognier is a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier (145,000 cases produced) is aged totally in stainless steel, has malolactic blocked, and offers what consumers love ? big, flowery, fresh honeysuckle and tropical fruit, a light to medium-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, texture and a long finish. Drink it over the next year.

Wine Spectator (2011) - 85 pts

Issue July 31, 2013 - Tangy peach, melon and citrus flavors are straightforward and juicy, with a floral note that lingers on the finish, adding some charm. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2012) - 88 pts

A wonderfully quaffable wine, one of the first from the the ’12 vintage, at a great price. It’s dry but rich with citrus, tropical fruit and mineral flavors, and a tingly acidity. — S.H. (6/1/2013)

Ken's Wine Guide (2014) - 88 pts

This almost clear colored wine opens with fragment pear bouquet with hints of peach. On the palate, this wine is light to medium bodied, rather acidic and bright. The flavor profile is a tart green apple with notes of minerality and lychee. I also detected hints of peach towards the end. The finish is dry and its acidity and flavors are prolonged for quite a while. This wine would be perfect for the beach on a hot summer day. With food you could serve it with bacon wrapped scallops. Enjoy - Ken

Miscellaneous (2014)

Wine Curmudgeon - "..It is, as always, one of the great cheap wines ever made, combining the qualities of each grape to produce something greater than the whole. Given how much stupid label, fake oak, sort of sweet cheap white wine gets foisted off on us, this is a revelation. And that it’s made with two grapes that don’t get much respect makes the Pine Ridge chenin blanc viognier that much more interesting. In addition, the Pine Ridge chenin blanc viognier is different each vintage, something that also rarely happens with cheap wine. The 2014 has less citrusy sauvignon blanc character than the 2013 (something you can get from chenin blanc), with more steely chenin minerality and a dollop of white fruit (peach?) from the viognier, as well as an almost floral aroma."
