Wine tasting notes

Arguably Donovan’s flagship wine, the Rall White 2019 is a total knockout. The blend of 68% Chenin, 28% Verdelho and 4% Viognier reflects the times and the move toward more precise, ageworthy whites. In the early days it was all about more textured wines, similar to older vintages of Palladius. 2017 was the first vintage where Chardonnay was omitted from the blend in favour of a higher proportion of Verdelho. “It is an amazingly versatile variety and my secret weapon. It pushes the acidity up by a gram at least and it doesn’t go through full malolactic, so it’s nice and crispy without losing texture.” The components are aged separately, in 500L barrels for the Verdelho and Viognier and used barrique for the Chenin. No new oak is employed at all. Clear crisp, more mineral and crystalline fruit vs the more rounded 2018, the 2019 displays notes of fresh lemon, pollen, apricot and salty spices. Lovely purity and focus, “the 2019 whites have a beautiful energy to them

Expert reviews

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2019) - 96 pts

The 2019 White, a blend of Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Viognier, has a lovely, beautifully defined bouquet of yellow plum, jasmine and white flowers. The palate is quite tangy on the entry, with a slither of Seville orange marmalade mixed with an underlying saltiness that drives the finish forward. Great tension and freshness. This is a killer white blend from Donovan Rall. Superb - Neal Martin

JancisRobinson.com (2019) - 17 pts

Pale gold. Complex nose with seriously fresh acidity and a nose that really could be described as a bouquet of floral aromas. Plus the tang of true, old-vine Chenin Blanc and the promise of a long life. Seems underpriced for the probity of intention and promise of ageability. It would seem a shame to drink this before 2021 and possibly even before 2022. Some fashionable light bitterness on the end - Jancis Robinson

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2019) - 5 stars

Generosity of warm Swartland, freshness of cooler Stellenbosch combine in complex 2019. Chenin & verdelho (68/28) with drop viognier deliver aromatic breadth; ripe stonefruit, earthy tones & floral nuance; limy, greengage zest enhance tension, texture & long sweet-fruit finish. Memorable. Wholebunch, older-oak ferment & ageing, 10% of chenin in concrete - Angela Lloyd.
