Wine tasting notes

Deep ruby red. Berry fruit, preserves and vanilla. Rich, full-bodied, packed with baked fruit, and hints of cocoa and vanilla on the finish.

Food matching

A wine with rare versatility. Good with pasta dressed with rich sauces (based on meat or mushrooms), good with risotto, grilled red meat, roasts and well-aged cheeses.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 91 pts

May 2017. Reviewer : Monica Larner - A good value wine, the 2013 Brolo Campofiorin Oro opens to a velvety dark appearance and shows thick layers of dried fruit, prune, spice and leather. The intensity is strong, yet it remains a clear step below Amarone in terms of power and muscle. This vintage offers good structure at the back with light touches of sweet and sun-dried fruit. This is a great wine to pair with barbecued meat.

JancisRobinson.com (2012) - 16.5 pts

Tasted May 2016 - Very dark colour. Fine aroma of sour and black cherry. Hint of smoke and coffee. Lovely tangy and zesty cherry fruit but still with fresh fruit character. Tastes bone dry. Fine but nicely dry tannins. Has bite and intensity and great fruit freshness. Food wine incarnate. (JH)

Wine Spectator (2013) - 88 pts

Spice and graphite accents lace the dark and brambly berry and wild herb notes in this creamy, medium-bodied red. Light tannins and a hint of tarry smoke show on the finish. Corvina, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2020

James Suckling (2011) - 92 pts

This shows iron, dried cherries and violets too. Ripe and juicy with dark fruit flavors that conclude with a wonderful dried apricot-like finish. Drink now.

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2008) - 88 pts

Mar/Apr '12 Deep ruby. Red fruits, chocolate and vanilla on the nose. Rich and suave in the mouth, with ripe red fruit and chocolate flavors that are ample but lack a little complexity. Finishes smooth and moderately long. The word brolo is equivalent to the French clos (a walled vineyard); this wine is made from a special selection of the best grapes available, all native and mainly corvina.

Wine Enthusiast (2009) - 89 pts

Made with native grapes Corvina, Rondinella e Oseleta, this wine has a fragrance of black fruit, raisin and spice. The smooth palate delivers ripe plum and blackberry layered with pepper notes and a hint of cocoa. — K.O. (12/1/2013)
