Wine tasting notes

A big, dark, concentrated wine with a real show-stopping attitude. Plums, blackberries, cocoa, cinnamon, anis and vanilla all make appearances. Ripe, chewy tannins and clean acidity provide the backdrop.

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2011) - 91 pts

eRobertParker.com #210 Dec 2013 - Mark Squires - The 2011 Reserva red is, as always, an old vines field blend (with 80% of the grapes sourced from vines 80+ years old, plus 20% Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca from vines of approximately 20 years of average age). The blend was aged in French barriques (70% new) for 17 months. Crisp and elegant, this has a beautifully balanced feel to it. There is nothing obvious or sexy here. It simply becomes more expressive and interesting with aeration (4+ hours), at which time it proves that there are promises here that will be kept. At the moment, unevolved and not too far off of its bottling date, it still has some things to prove in the cellar. Drink 2015-2026 . There were 7,000 six-bottle cases produced.

JancisRobinson.com (2009) - 17.5 pts

Tasted Oct 2011 - 69% old vineyards (20 varieties) plus 31% of younger Touriga Nacional. 17 months in French oak.Deep crimson. Sweet and spicy oak and dark fruit on the nose. But there's a clearly mineral Douro overlay. Vanilla laced black fruit on the palate with a sour/savoury aftertastes that lifts it from the initial sweetness. Warm finish but the fine, dry tannins add a contrasting cool edge to the aftertaste. (JH)

Wine Spectator (2010) - 91 pts

Issue June 15, 2013 - Powerful, complex and concentrated, with good cut to the dried blackberry, dark currant and crushed plum flavors, featuring savory and cedary notes. Lithe, delivering a finish of dried beef, mineral and spice. Drink now through 2018. 6,160 cases made. ?KM

Wine Enthusiast (2010) - 93 pts

Using a blend of grapes sourced from old vines, this is powerful, dense and very concentrated. At the same time, an elegance lightens the wine’s weight and integrates all of its elements. This serious, structured offering should be aged for 4–5 years. — R.V. (12/1/2012)
