Wine tasting notes

This wine is intense, fresh and minerally with peach and citrus fruit flavours and just a hint of spice. It is medium-bodied with a gentle, fresh finish.

Winery information

Domaine Lafage

Jean-Marc Lafage's family has been growing grapes in Roussillon for six generations but it was Jean-Marc who had the ambition to stop selling the grapes and to found a domaine. He and his oenologist wife Eliane founded Domaine Lafage in 1996 and the estate now runs to some 138ha of vines across Roussillon with parcels in the Agly Valley, Aspres and Perpignan. They specialise in old vines. The Cuvee Centenaire Blanc takes its name from the age of the Grenache Blanc vines, and with that age comes the pronounced minerality and concentration that makes Roussillon wines stand out from the crowd. The reds in this part of France usually garner the most attention, and rightly so, the Agly Valley with its black shale and layered schist soils in the shadow of ruined Cathar castles is one of Europe's most exciting terroirs and Lafage's Cuvee Authentique is a fantastic example.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2016) - 90 pts

April 2017. Reviewer : Jeb Dunnock - A wine that always over-delivers, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Centenaire Blanc (Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Roussanne) is fresh and crisp, with medium-bodied notes of citrus, white peach and a hint of pineapple. It’s about as quaffable as they come and has real depth and length. Drink it over the coming year.

JancisRobinson.com (2008) - 15.5 pts

Published : 28-Sep-2009. 80% Grenache Blanc/Grenache Gris, 20% Roussanne. Hint of cigarette ash. Not quite enough freshness. Not as rich as previous vintages.

Decanter (2014) - 95 pts

A classic blend of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne. Fresh minerality on both nose and palate with an underlying salinity. Tight-knit and stony with a long finish. Youthful.

Natalie McLean (2011) - 92 pts

A gloriously aromatic white wine with aromas of peach blossom and Asian pear. Mouth-watering acidity for seafood and chicken dishes. Medium-bodied and perfectly balanced.

Vinification notes

The grapes are hand-harvested in 2 lots. One lot is picked later in order for the grapes to ripen for slightly longer and develop more complex flavours. The grapes are blended before fermentation. After alcoholic fermentation, 10% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged 3 months before bottling (30% in new French oak barrels and 70% in stainless steel tanks).
