Wine tasting notes

Deep minerality on the nose with aromas of citrus, peach flowers, dried herbs, ginger and spices. On the palate it has an interesting texture, with weight and depth and extraordinarily pure fruit led by a present acidity and with a touch of almond skin. A wine with a long, elegant and slightly bitter finish.

Winery information

Rall Wines

Donovan Rall is one of the key figures in South Africa’s explosive New Wave movement. One of the original “garagista” producers in the Swartland, Donovan can now proudly say that he makes some of the most highly sought-after wines in the country. Well-travelled, affable, and ambitious, he trained at the University of Stellenbosch in viticulture and enology with David Sadie, amongst others, then worked in wineries across Europe and Australia before returning to South Africa in 2007. There he joined Eben Sadie as an assistant winemaker but in the space of a year, he had six barrels tucked away under his own name, and the inaugural Rall White was born. An immediate critical success, Donovan struck out on his own and he has not looked back, still buying up small parcels of top-quality fruit, contracting vineyards, and strengthening his reputation as a master blender. Over time he has fine-tuned his own winemaking style towards fresher, more vivid wines, and the wines have never looked better. Fermentations are natural and spontaneous with no interventions, and aging takes place in various vessels including concrete, cask and amphora depending on the variety. Primarily Swartland based, Donovan also takes prime fruit from the Piekenierskloof, Darling and Stellenbosch regions, and consults on various projects around the country.

Expert reviews

JancisRobinson.com (2018) - 16.5 pts

High site in Piekenierskloof, vines 20 years old. Picked early and goes with full solids to concrete eggs. Chalky, dusty-mineral pear fruit. Dry and chalky in texture, with the fruit flavour of Grenache Blanc and still great freshness. Chalky length and that lovely dry dusty texture that I associate with concrete - Julia Harding MW

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2018) - 90 pts

The 2018 Grenache Blanc is whole-bunch-pressed and matured in concrete and clay (no oak). It offers generous lemon curd, brioche and orange blossom scents that are well defined. The palate is fresh on the entry, offering orange pith and clementine notes, and quite tight at present. The slightly curt finish suggests it will need a couple of years to really show its mettle in bottle - Neal Martin.

Vinification notes

The clusters used to make this wine come from an ungrafted vine in Piekenierskloof, which is harvested at two different stages of ripeness. When the grapes reach the winery, they ferment spontaneously, with some of the grapes in contact with their skins. The resulting wine ages in cement eggs.
