Wine tasting notes

On the nose, notes of violet and fresh aromas of noticeable mineralization arise. There are certain reminders of cappuccino: it has a very interesting nose with a long development of nuances. In the mouth, the terrain is perfectly represented with a certain calcareous taste, an excellent integrated acidity. It is an exuberant wine, with a lot of volume, round and appetizing.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2008) - 93 pts

Wine Advocate #188 Apr 2010 - Jay Miller - The 2008 Ultreia St. Jacques is 100% Mencia aged for 12 months in egg-shaped, 1500-liter barrels with batonnage. It displays a super-fragrant perfume of boysenberry, rhubarb, and cranberry followed by a succulent, dense, concentrated, and mouth-filling wine. It is a feast for both the intellect and the senses and may well be the best wine under $25 from anywhere. These wines have no track record of longevity but the balance and fruit quality suggest to me that my aging estimates are probably conservative. Of course, time will tell.

JancisRobinson.com (2007) - 16.5 pts

Tasted June 2009 - Mencía. Aged in big 5,000 litre oak casks. The Saint Jacques vineyard is all 100 year old vines on clay soil. Very very dark, sweet and soft and explosive. Soft fruit. Dark purple and very cosseting. Very good value. Neat, dry finish. (JR)

Jamie Goode (2008) - 93 pts

Lovely pure, elegant nose with smooth cherry and berry fruit. The palate is supple and fresh with focused, smooth berry fruits. Stylish with lovely precision. Understated and fine.
