Wine tasting notes

Hints of cherries and mint with meat-spice and smoky undertones. Softly rounded and accessible wine with balanced tannins for early drinking.

Serve with roasts, duckling and full flavoured Mediterranean dishes as well as lamb or grilled meat and vegetables.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 87 pts

Nov 2015 - Neal Martin - Blended with 8% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Merlot Reserve is matured in used oak. It was showing quite a lot of reduction when I tasted it, though it blows off quickly to reveal attractive mulberry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, moderate complexity, fleshy in the mouth with touches of leather and dried herbs sprinkled over the finish. Enjoy this over the next 3-5 years.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2008) - 87 pts

Mar/Apr 2011 by Stephen Tanzer - Dark red. Slightly high-toned aromas of redcurrant, spearmint and clove oil. A fresh, minty, moderately sweet midweight that shows decent flavor intensity but modest nuance and depth. About 15% cabernet franc was blended in just before the bottling.

Wine Enthusiast (2009) - 87 pts

Herbal accents grace the black plum and berry aromas and flavors, and a touch of biltong spice and meat mingle with the fruit for added character. Approachable and soft, with delicate tannins and an easy, friendly finish. Drink now. — L.B. (5/1/2012)

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2010) - 4 stars

Nicely judged, well-rounded 2010 includes 15% cab franc. Good fruit concentration, fresh acidity, fine tannins before long, dry finish. Accessible without being simple. Trumps 2009 ().
