Wine tasting notes

As ever for Serralunga, darker in colour than the Bricco Fiasco. Loaded with sweet dark fruit, fresh bramble, cassis and blueberry with strong liquorice notes , the body is full and the fruit is round. This is dense and mouth filling and although the acid is not high there is a tremendous mineral, chalk quality to this that lends a distinctly fresh, savoury quality that balances out the powerful, ripe fruit. A superb effort.

Expert reviews

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2011) - 96 pts

Mar 2015 - Iron, smoke, spices, rose petal, lavender and mint meld into a core of dark red fruit in the 2011 Barolo Margheria. Here, too, the style is all about finesse, nuance and complexity. Firm tannins convey an overall impression of classicism. The Margheria is the most classic of the wines in the Scavino range. Three years in cask, with natural malos the spring after the harvest are among the choices that give the Margheria its unique personality. This is a terrific showing from the Margheria, a wine that has blossomed considerably since I last tasted it.-- Antonio Galloni

JancisRobinson.com (2011) - 17+ pts

Mar 2015 - Palish ruby with broad orange-tinged rim. Iron, orange and dark cherry all in abundance on the nose. This screams Nebbiolo. Compact and tight and perfectly balanced palate. Wonderful acidity, almost burgundian in style except for the truly muscular tannins. (WS)

Wine Spectator (2011) - 95 pts

Aug 2015 - Woodsy aromas of wild herbs, tobacco and tar conceal the core of cherry for now, but the fruit is more apparent on the palate. Sweet, vibrant and firmly structured, with admirable energy and drive at this stage. Offers a long, mouthwatering finish

James Suckling (2011) - 93 pts

A beautiful and refined red with plum and berry character and hints of hazelnuts. Full body, fine and chewy tannins and a fresh, long finish. Better in 2018

Wine Enthusiast (2011) - 93 pts

Intense aromas of rose, iris, perfumed berry and eucalyptus lead the way on this radiant wine. The vibrant palate offers juicy wild cherry, raspberry, grilled sage, menthol and dark kitchen spice while firm, fine-grained tannins provide the framework.
