Wine tasting notes

Classic dark 'tar' and perfumed 'roses' on the nose, light in colour but with great power, concentration and well balanced ripe tannins. This is a wine to match with rich foods and game dishes.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 91 pts

June 2017 - Monica Larner - Fruit for this wine is sourced from across the appellation and much of it is purchased. In fact, Fontanafredda is one of the largest buyers of fruit in the region. The 2013 Barolo is an appellation-wide expression made with Nebbiolo picked in Monforte d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Serralunga d'Alba. The farmers are encouraged to follow certain house rules such as the elimination of chemicals to achieve consistency. This is an immediate and direct wine with streamlined aromas of wild berry, tar, truffle and cola. You also get a distant hint of roasted chestnut that comes from the botte grande.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2010) - 90 pts

Sept 2014 - The 2010 Barolo is a very pretty entry-level offering. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries and spices lift from the glass in a silky mid-weight Barolo that already drinks quite nicely. Readers looking for an affordable Barolo with tons of varietal signatures will want to check out this expressive, harmonious Barolo from Fontanafredda. -- Antonio Galloni

JancisRobinson.com (2011) - 16 pts

Tasted June 2015 - Graphite, leather, earth and eucalyptus aromas and flavors highlight this taut, chewy red. Balanced, with a vibrant structure and a long finish evoking licorice, tar and soy. Best from 2018 through 2029.

Wine Spectator (2012) - 91 pts

This is tight and high-pitched, with bracing tannins locked around the cherry, eucalyptus, leather and juniper notes. Should make an elegant if sinewy Barolo in due time. Tobacco and iron details infuse the finish. Best from 2019 through 2034

James Suckling (2013) - 93 pts

This is really perfumed and enticing with so much dried flower and berry character. Full body, structured and very long. Extremely polished and beautiful. Hard not to drink now but will age nicely.

Wine Enthusiast (2013) - 88 pts

Pretty aromas of violet, red berry and crushed herb lead the way. The bright, accessible palate offers pomegranate, sour cherry and white pepper flavors within a frame of solid tannins and vibrant acidity. Drink through 2023.
