Wine tasting notes

Perfumed Barolo of great refinement and pedigree; fine, focused flavours of small, tight-packed intense red berries, with touches of currant, mineral, cherry stone and wild strawberry. Floral, sweet-fruited and with plenty of verve. Simply ravishing! Bricco Viole is a very fine La Morra vineyard that translates as ‘Top of the Violet Hill’ and is one of highest vineyards in La Morra, 400–450 metres above sea level.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2009) - 90 pts

Wine Advocate # 207. June 2013. Reviewer : Monica Larner - The next wine was aged two years in French barrique. The 2009 Barolo Bricco delle Viole opens to a brooding, dark appearance and delivers a good amount of oak spice and sweet softness. Indian spice, cinnamon, chocolate and dark berry fruit are the protagonists. Executed in a plump and opulent style, you can pop the cork on this bottle almost immediately. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2009) - 90 pts

The 2009 Barolo Bricco Viole shows why this high-altitude site is favored in warmer years. Although fairly approachable for this site, the 2009 nevertheless has good verve and energy. Dark red berries, flowers and sweet spices are all woven together in this mid-weight Barolo. I especially like the vibrancy of the finish, something that is quite rare for the year. -- Antonio Galloni

JancisRobinson.com (2009) - 17 pts

Tasted Sept 2013 - Lightish cherry red. More spicy and earthy than the straight Barolo 2009. Leather and a touch of orange. Fine oak spice in the background. Compact, chewy and rich but not in the least heavy. Youthful but has the makings of elegance. (JH)

Wine Spectator (2009) - 91 pts

Nov 30, 2013 - Fresh cherry, black currant, floral and spice aromas and flavors highlight this accessible red. The tannins are dense, imparting balance and dovetailing pleasantly on the long finish. A pretty Barolo. Best from 2015 through 2028
